Reading
This week in reading we will continue to study the elements of fiction. We will be learning about these skills through our mini lessons. The mini lessons are meant to be brief class discussions in which the teacher models a strategy and then assists the students in completing it. The students also share their ideas with their partner and/or with the class. On Monday, we will be completing an AIMS WEBB fluency test with each student. This helps us gage their fluency levels. A fiction and a non-fiction book trailer needs to be completed by the end of the quarter (October 30th). Reading Logs are due on Fridays.
This week the skills and strategies we are working on include:
Our mentor texts this week include:
Writing
This week we are continuing working on our opinion writing. We are currently working on our second essay, based on a character from a book of our choice. We will be learning how to write an introduction and conclusion that supports our claim. Also, we will work on correctly citing quotes from our texts. We will practice this with an article and then apply it to our own books. We will review how to choose powerful quotes that support our claims.
Math
This week we are continuing on in Unit 2, Expressions and Equations. We will be learning about exponents and expressions. We will learn the origin of the terms “squared” and “cubed”, and then we will apply these to some practice problems. We are working on math station work, which will be due on Friday. Each day at the beginning of math, we will be completing a timed fluency probe to check our progress.
