Reading
This week in reading we will continue to study the elements of fiction. We will be learning about these skills through our interactive read alouds. During an interactive read aloud, students watch as the teacher models different strategies and explains her thinking. The students also share their ideas with their partner and/or with the class. A fiction and a non-fiction book trailer needs to be completed by the end of the quarter (October 30th). Reading Logs (home and school) are due on Friday’s.

Our mentor texts this week include:
Writing
This week we are continuing working on our opinion writing. We have chosen short stories to work with and are developing our ideas about the main characters. We are learning how to write a claim that encompasses the whole character. As the week progresses, we will work on locating evidence within the text to support our ideas. An opinion writing checklist will be passed out midweek so that we can evaluate our progress in opinion writing. By the end of the week, we will be finishing up our first essay!
Math
This week we are completing Real World Task (RWE) 5 and practicing the skills that were at a beginning or developing level on the Unit 1 post test. On Friday, we will have a chance to improve our scores by retaking parts, or the entire test, based on the skills.
