Just a reminder that study hall is offered every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:00-3:45. This is a time when your child can receive extra support, ask questions, and have a quiet place to work. Please let me know when your child is staying for study hall.
Don't forget to check out your child's blog (and their classmates blogs!) under the E-Portfolios tab. Feel free to leave them comments and ask them questions about their work! Your child will receive something special when you do!
Please check the 6S calendar under the "students" tab at the top of this page. Nightly homework assignments and important dates are located here!
This week we will be taking the CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test) on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. The CogAT
assess students’ abilities in reasoning and problem solving using verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal (spatial) symbols.
Reading
This week we will be reading a historical fiction story titled Train to Somewhere by Eve Bunting. Train to Somewhere is about a girl named Marianne traveling on an orphan train. She seems to be the child nobody wants - until she arrives Somewhere. Over the next couple of weeks, students will be making inferences to understand causes and effects in narrative text and continuing to use text structure to explore narrative text.

Writing
3rd Quarter our focus is on Research-Based Informational Writing. We have already learned how to take power notes while watching a video and then using those notes to create a summary. Our next step will be to read an analyze a wide variety of sources to develop a big-picture view of a topic. We will be using our power note strategy to take notes and organize our thoughts while looking at a variety of sources.
Math
We are continuing Unit 2 on Ratios! Click here to view the Parent Newsletter for Unit 2. The newsletter will give you more specific information about the entire unit as well as videos and ways that you can help your child at home.
Our next topic will focus on modeling percents, and writing percents as decimals and fractions. We will also be working on determining a percent of a quantity.
Social Studies
After learning about the how the types of communities that first appeared along the Nile, and how the Nile was used for trade, we will begin to learn about the rulers of Egypt. We will learn about the history of kingship in ancient Egypt, Egypt's accomplishments during each of the three kingdom periods, and we will begin to understand what characterized the rule of Egypt during the New Kingdom period.
