I was at the food table in the middle of the street, eating tortilla chips with spinach and artichoke dip. Today was the block party, and there were kids everywhere. Screaming, running, and mostly getting hurt.
I sat at the curb of the street, watching a group of kids play base ball it the street, when something caught my eye. I stood up, staring at something farther down the street. It moved.
"Guys! Come look at this!" I said, running towards the creature. I gasped. It was a squirrel. Not only was it a squirrel, but a baby squirrel. I was wiggling everywhere, trying to get up, but it couldn't. Probably broke a few bones. Now, there was a huge swarm of kids huddled around it.
"What happened?" One kid asked.
"I think it fell from a tree!" Said another.
I looked at the branch that the squirrel fell from. It looked like it was about a thirty foot drop, and considering how small it was, it was lucky to be alive. I stood there, staring at it.
"Alright guys, give it some room! The mother might be nearby." Said a parent, who came over to see what was going on. He was right. We saw a larger squirrel, sitting a few feet away, staring at the baby squirrel. We all took a couple big steps back, not taking a eye of of the mother.
The mother walked up to the baby, sniffing it, trying to see what was wrong. We all sat and watched with worry. After a few minutes, the mom gently picked the baby up with her mouth, scrambled into the tree, back into it's nest. I still stood, watching, even though every one else left to do other things.
I hope it's okay. I thought, looking up into the nest. I stood there, standing still, waiting for any sign to tell me the baby was still alive. Then, it finally came. I saw a tiny, fuzzy brown head poke out over the edge of the nest, looking at me, and right then, I knew the baby squirrel would be okay.
